Technical SEO Checklist: 15 Fixes That Actually Move Rankings
Most SEO Audits Surface Too Much
Run any automated audit and you will get two hundred issues. Most of them have negligible ranking impact. The challenge is not finding problems — it is knowing which ones to fix first.
After running audits across hundreds of client sites, these are the fifteen fixes that consistently move rankings. For the broader strategic context, read our Digital Marketing Strategy framework.
Critical Fixes — Do These First
1. Fix crawl errors. Check Google Search Console for 404s and server errors. Broken pages waste crawl budget and bleed link equity.
2. Resolve redirect chains. A redirect from A to B to C reduces link equity at every hop. Clean chains down to a single redirect wherever possible.
3. Fix duplicate content. Canonical tags, pagination handling, and URL parameters must be properly configured. Duplicate content causes Google to split its ranking signals across multiple pages rather than concentrate them on one.
4. Address Core Web Vitals failures. LCP, CLS, and INP are active ranking factors. Check your scores with PageSpeed Insights and fix what is failing. For the full breakdown, read How Website Speed Affects SEO Rankings.
5. Repair broken internal links. Internal links pass authority and guide crawlers. Broken ones do neither.
High-Impact Improvements
6. Optimize title tags. Every page needs a unique, keyword-relevant title under 60 characters. This remains one of the strongest on-page signals.
7. Fix missing or duplicate meta descriptions. They do not directly influence rankings, but they affect click-through rate — which does.
8. Implement proper heading structure. One H1 per page. H2s for main sections. H3s for sub-points. A logical hierarchy helps both rankings and readability.
9. Add missing image alt text. Alt text contributes to page relevancy and matters for image search visibility.
10. Improve internal linking deliberately. Your most important pages should receive the most internal links. Build a planned architecture rather than linking at random. Moz's internal linking guide is a useful reference.
Technical Foundations
11. Ensure HTTPS sitewide. HTTP pages are flagged as insecure and rank below equivalent HTTPS pages.
12. Fix mobile usability issues. Google indexes mobile-first. Tap targets, font sizes, and viewport configuration must pass mobile usability checks in Search Console.
13. Optimize page speed. Compress images to WebP, minify CSS and JavaScript, leverage browser caching, and use a CDN. Every second of load time costs you both rankings and conversions.
14. Fix XML sitemap issues. Your sitemap should contain only canonical, indexable URLs. Remove noindex pages and redirect targets from it.
15. Implement structured data. Schema markup for your business type, services, FAQs, and reviews helps Google understand your content accurately and unlocks eligibility for rich results.
Start With the Critical Fixes
Most sites see measurable ranking movement from fixing items one through five alone. Fix those first. Then layer in the improvements. Once the technical foundation is solid, build your content engine on top of it using Topic Clusters.
